A wave of startups are selling enterprise AI 'memory layers' to capture tacit knowledge. The problem isn't the idea — it's what happens when ungoverned memory scales.

What happened

Last week, a handful of announcements landed close enough together that the pattern became hard to ignore.

Munich-based Interloom raised $16.5 million in seed funding to build what it calls a "context graph" — a continuously updated map of how operational decisions actually get made inside an enterprise, drawn from millions of real cases rather than formal documentation. Separately, Littlebird raised $11 million to build an ambient recall tool that reads your screen continuously and makes that context queryable. And VentureBeat ran a detailed piece on why enterprise agents keep failing in production — with tacit knowledge and undocumented exception handling named as a primary culprit.

These are not coincidentally timed press releases. They're a signal. Enterprise AI buyers have absorbed the first wave of RAG pitches, run the pilots, and found a gap that nobody's fixed yet: their agents can read the docs. They just can't replicate the judgment of the person who knows why those docs are wrong.

Why it matters

Think about the last time a new person joined your team. You handed them the documentation. They read it. Then they called you three times in the first week asking about situations the documentation didn't cover — the exception cases, the Friday-afternoon workarounds, the "we don't do it that way anymore but nobody updated the manual" scenarios.

Enterprise AI agents hit the same wall. The model isn't the problem. The documentation is. It should be uncomfortable for everyone.

The rest will be running on institutional memory they can't audit, can't update, and can't explain when something goes wrong.
