Microsoft Solved One 'Version of Reality' Problem. The Harder One Is Still Open.

Fabric IQ aligns enterprise AI agents on shared semantics. It doesn't fix outdated handbooks, contradictory policies, or decayed documentation. That gap is still yours to close.

Microsoft announced a significant expansion of Fabric IQ this week, and VentureBeat's coverage frames the problem it solves cleanly: enterprise AI agents keep operating from "different versions of reality." Each agent, built on a different platform by a different team, carries its own interpretation of what a customer is, what a region means, what an order looks like. When those definitions diverge across a workforce of agents, decisions break down in ways that don't look like model failure — they look like coordination failure.

Fabric IQ's answer is a shared business ontology, now accessible via MCP to any agent from any vendor. It's real infrastructure for a real problem.

But there are two versions of the reality problem. Microsoft just solved one of them.

What Fabric IQ does

Amir Netz, CTO of Microsoft Fabric, reached for a film analogy that's hard to shake: agents are like the character from 50 First Dates, waking up every morning having forgotten everything they knew about the business. The ontology layer is the daily explanation — the shared context all agents start from.

Making it MCP-accessible is the step that turns this from a Fabric-specific feature into multi-vendor infrastructure. "It doesn't really matter whose agent it is, how it was built, what the role is," Netz told VentureBeat. "There's certain common knowledge, certain common context that all the agents will share."

That matters. Genuinely. Multi-agent deployments with misaligned definitions are a category of failure that's hard to debug and easy to underestimate. Giving every agent the same starting vocabulary is useful work.

Netz also drew an explicit line between what the ontology does and what RAG does. The ontology handles real-time business state: which planes are in the air, whether a crew has enough rest hours, what the current product priorities are. RAG, he said, handles something different — "large document bodies such as regulations, company handbooks and technical documentation, where on-demand retrieval is more practical than loading everything into context."

That distinction is the hinge the rest of this argument turns on.

What Fabric IQ doesn't do

Fabric IQ cannot tell you whether the company handbook it retrieves is still accurate. It cannot detect that the pricing document was updated in November but the version in your knowledge base is from August. It cannot find the two HR policy documents that contradict each other on remote work eligibility, or flag that the compliance manual references a regulation that was revised three months ago.

Those problems live in the document layer. And that layer is, in most enterprises, in rough shape.

Consider what Zar Toolan, former Chief Data and AI Officer at Edward Jones, described to CIO.com: "We're unreliable and ineffective searching across multiple knowledge hubs; we have limited data and fragmented content curation; we do not have a consistent taxonomy for our data." That's Edward Jones — a 100-year-old firm with billions under management — describing a document environment that would make any RAG deployment unreliable, regardless of what semantic alignment layer sits on top.

The agents might finally agree on what a "client" means. They'll still retrieve the wrong answer from a stale policy document.

Analyst Sanjeev Mohan, quoted in the same VentureBeat piece, put the remaining challenge plainly: "The harder work will be ensuring that the context layer is reliable and trustworthy."

He's right. And that work is almost entirely unaddressed by semantic tooling.

Why the gap matters right now

The timing here is not incidental. Enterprise AI adoption is stalling in ways that increasingly look like a content quality problem masquerading as a model problem.

According to PwC's 2026 Global CEO Survey, only 12% of CEOs say AI has delivered both cost and revenue benefits. That number, from a survey of chief executives at organizations actively investing in AI, should be a wake-up call. The gap between AI investment and AI outcomes is real, and it isn't primarily a model capability problem. The models are good enough. The question is what they're reading.

When Netz explicitly places RAG in charge of regulations, handbooks, and technical documentation, he's identifying a dependency chain. The ontology layer assumes the RAG layer is reliable. The RAG layer assumes the source documents are accurate. Break any link in that chain and the whole system produces confident, well-framed, wrong answers.

Enterprise AI teams have spent the last two years optimizing agents, choosing models, building pipelines. Many of them have spent comparatively little time asking when the documents those agents query were last verified. Or whether two documents in the same knowledge base agree with each other. Or whether the policy document that got quietly updated in Q4 made it into the system.

This isn't a technology gap. It's a maintenance gap. And semantic alignment doesn't close it.

And IBM and NVIDIA both named data quality as the enterprise AI bottleneck at GTC 2026, but stopped short of the specific mechanism: it's not just data quality in the abstract, it's document quality at the source that gets retrieved.

The Mojar lens

Microsoft's own architecture tells you what's at stake here. Netz drew the line himself: ontology for real-time state, RAG for regulations, handbooks, technical documentation. He handed that problem to RAG — and then moved on.

What RAG requires, and what Microsoft's announcement does nothing to provide, is a knowledge base that's actually in good shape. Documents that have been audited for contradictions. Policies that reflect the current version, not the one from 18 months ago. SOPs that have been checked against the operations they describe. Content that someone, or something, is actively responsible for maintaining.

The semantic layer is impressive. It solves a genuine coordination problem. But semantic intelligence operating on decayed source material still produces wrong answers with great confidence — they're just wrong answers that all the agents agree on.

That might actually be worse.

Shared semantics is progress. The harder problem — making the documents beneath that semantic layer trustworthy — remains open. That's the bottleneck that will define enterprise AI maturity in the next 18 months. The tools for semantic alignment are here. The tools for active knowledge maintenance are catching up. The question is whether enterprise teams recognize they need both.

Building beautifully aligned agents on top of a document layer nobody maintains is not an AI strategy. It's just a more sophisticated way to get the wrong answer.
