Atlassian Just Fired the People Who Kept Your Knowledge Base Accurate

Atlassian cut 1,600 people this week. More than 900 were in R&D. The CTO is stepping down. Every headline covers the stock drop, the severance bill, the CEO's carefully scripted employee video. The company that built Confluence, the enterprise wiki that hundreds of thousands of organizations run their institutional knowledge on, just shed a significant portion of the workforce that maintained knowledge systems. Nobody is asking what happens to the documents.
This isn't a headcount story
Those 900+ R&D departures weren't all writing code in the conventional sense. A significant share were doing invisible work: updating runbooks when infrastructure changed, catching when an onboarding guide contradicted what the product actually did, noticing that three Confluence pages about the same policy said three different things. The people who knew which pages were authoritative and which ones were five-year-old relics nobody had touched since the last reorg.
When those people leave, the documents stay behind. The accuracy doesn't go with them.
CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes said in his note to staff: "Our approach is not 'AI replaces people'. But it would be disingenuous to pretend AI doesn't change the mix of skills we need or the number of roles required in certain areas." That's careful language. An honest acknowledgment that roles are going. Not an answer to what those roles were actually doing.
The internal contradiction
Atlassian is betting that AI compensates for the reduced headcount. There's a problem with that bet. Atlassian's own Rovo AI reads Confluence documents. If those documents get worse, whether through accumulated contradictions, outdated policies nobody flags, or stale pages that survive multiple product generations, Rovo returns worse answers. The knowledge layer the AI depends on is the same layer that just lost its maintenance staff.
This isn't only an Atlassian problem. Block cut roughly 50% of its workforce last month, also citing AI productivity (Reuters). Two major software companies, two months apart, the same justification. Neither has explained who maintains the knowledge their AI now needs to function correctly.
Before Atlassian's announcement, Professionals Australia Director Paul Inglis called the cuts "a devastating blow." Workers had joined the union specifically to seek oversight of AI in the workplace (The Guardian). They saw what was coming. The institutional memory of what was about to be lost walked out alongside the people who held it.
The broader numbers aren't reassuring. 61% of enterprises delay AI deployment because they don't trust their underlying data, and 66% report getting biased or misleading AI outputs — the documented baseline for organizations deploying AI on top of unmanaged knowledge (DataHub). Atlassian's customers are about to find out which category they fall into.
Understanding why this matters at a structural level means starting one layer down, with what enterprises actually get wrong before they deploy AI agents.
The function being eliminated
The work that's disappearing has a name: knowledge maintenance. Scanning documents for contradictions. Flagging content that's gone stale. Propagating policy changes across related pages. Removing information that's no longer accurate. It doesn't appear in a product changelog. It shows up in the absence of problems — the AI query that returns a correct answer because someone cleaned up the source documents three weeks earlier.
When that function disappears without replacement, the degradation is quiet at first. Contradictions accumulate. Old versions of processes coexist with current ones. An onboarding guide that references a feature retired two years ago keeps getting served to new hires. Each individual error is small. Together, they compound.
This is the same failure pattern behind most agentic AI errors in enterprise deployments: not model failures, but clean-model-bad-data failures. The AI does exactly what it's built to do. The problem is what it's reading.
The companies that get this right aren't choosing between knowledge workers and AI. They're replacing the curation function with automation, not eliminating it. That's a different architectural decision, and most organizations haven't made it yet.
What matters in six months
Atlassian's bet might be right about engineering output. AI coding tools are genuinely productive, and a smaller R&D team with better tooling can do real work. That part of the argument is defensible.
But AI can assist documentation work without being able to self-audit, self-correct, or identify what's outdated. That requires a knowledge management layer, whether human or automated, that operates separately from the AI doing retrieval. Cutting the maintenance function and assuming the retrieval layer compensates is how you end up serving confidently wrong answers at scale.
The question isn't whether Atlassian can operate with fewer people. It's whether their customers' Confluence instances will still be accurate in six months. The people who would have noticed are no longer there to notice.
