Enterprise AI promised to give knowledge workers their time back. According to new research from Foxit, surveying 1,400 professionals across the UK and US, the average executive gets 16 minutes per week. That's not a typo. They perceive 4.6 hours saved. They spend 4 hours and 20 minutes verifying what the AI produced. Net result: 16 minutes.
For end users, the math is worse. They don't gain time. They lose it.
The numbers behind the headline
The Foxit "State of Document Intelligence 2026" report is circulating as a productivity story. Press coverage leads with the feel-good number — 89% of executives say AI boosts productivity. The uncomfortable math arrives three paragraphs later.
Here's the breakdown by role:

End users are slower with AI than without it. They're also less confident about why: only 33% of end users say they're highly confident in AI-generated outputs, compared to 60% of executives who say the same. Only 1 in 10 end users describes themselves as "extremely confident" in AI accuracy. Among executives, it's 1 in 4.
Executives aren't more sophisticated about AI. They're just further from the verification work.
As Evan Reiss, SVP of Marketing at Foxit, described it:
"AI accelerates creation, but it introduces new layers of review, fact-checking and correction. What we're seeing is a verification burden emerging inside document workflows. Time saved generating content is being absorbed by the time required to trust it."
The trust numbers confirm this is a structural problem, not an edge case. 34% of respondents cite trust in AI output as a top adoption blocker. 25% cite response accuracy specifically. These aren't feature requests for better models. They're a diagnosis of something broken upstream.
The root cause Foxit didn't name
Foxit has identified the symptom. The verification burden exists because AI outputs require verification. What no press coverage has touched is why enterprise AI outputs require so much verification in the first place.
The answer isn't that AI models are unreliable in isolation.
AI tools used in document workflows (drafting proposals, answering policy questions, summarizing compliance requirements, looking up pricing) don't generate responses from raw capability. They retrieve from source materials: policies, procedures, contracts, product specs, onboarding guides. When an employee asks an AI assistant about the return policy or data retention requirements, the AI goes looking in the knowledge base.
The problem is what it finds there.
If the return policy document was last updated 18 months ago, the AI retrieves accurately from an inaccurate source. What closing the gap actually requires

Source documents need to be actively maintained, not "reasonably up to date." That means clear ownership, defined review cycles, and mechanisms that flag when content has gone stale.

Executives who solve the upstream document problem — who invest in keeping their knowledge bases accurate, consistent, and current — will see that 16-minute net become something closer to the 4.6 hours they're already claiming. The perception and the reality will align, because the verification step will stop being necessary.

That's the uncomfortable upside of the Foxit data. The reason AI isn't paying off the way executives think it already is — is fixable.
